Carotid Artery Surgery
The buildup of fatty, waxy deposits in blood vessels located on each side of the neck may restrict blood flow to the brain. Removing these deposits can reduce the risk of stroke.
This measure assesses the following:
- A hospital's experience performing the procedure against Leapfrog's hospital volume standard of 20 procedures per year,
- Whether the hospital’s process for privileging its surgeons includes requiring the surgeon to meet Leapfrog's annual surgeon volume standard of 10 procedures per year, and
- Whether the hospital has protocols in place to ensure that the surgery is not performed unnecessarily on patients who would not benefit
