Total Knee Replacement
Surgeons can remove bones and cartilage in the knee joint, and replace them with metal and plastic components, creating an artificial joint. The procedure is done to relieve knee pain and/or limited range of motion.
This measure assesses the following:
- A hospital's experience performing the procedure against Leapfrog's hospital volume standard of 50 procedures per year,
- Whether the hospital’s process for privileging its surgeons includes requiring the surgeon to meet Leapfrog's annual surgeon volume standard of 25 procedures per year, and
- Whether the hospital has protocols in place to ensure that the surgery is not performed unnecessarily on patients who would not benefit
