Open Aortic Procedures
Patients with an enlarged aorta may need surgery to repair the large artery in the heart that carries blood to the abdomen, pelvis, and legs. In more serious cases, the surgery is most often performed by making an incision in the abdomen and using a long cylinder-like tube called a graft to repair the enlarged part of the aorta.
This measure assesses the following:
- A hospital's experience performing the procedure against Leapfrog's hospital volume standard of 10 procedures per year and
- Whether the hospital’s process for privileging its surgeons includes requiring the surgeon to meet Leapfrog's annual surgeon volume standard of 7 procedures per year
