Congenital Heart Surgery for Infants (Norwood Procedure)

The Norwood procedure is an open heart surgery that re-constructs a baby’s underdeveloped aorta, and inserts a shunt to direct blood to the lungs.

This measure assesses the following:

  • A hospital's experience performing the procedure against Leapfrog's hospital volume standard of 8 procedures per year and
  • Whether the hospital’s process for privileging its surgeons includes requiring the surgeon to meet Leapfrog's annual surgeon volume standard of 5 procedures per year
