Screening Newborns

Experts agree that newborn bilirubin levels should be checked prior to discharge to detect and treat jaundice. If not detected and treated early, jaundice can cause irreversible brain damage resulting in permanent visual, muscular or other disabilities and even death. This measure assesses a hospital's rate of screening newborns for their bilirubin level prior to discharge.
