Maternity Care Processes

Experts agree that newborn bilirubin levels should be checked prior to discharge to detect and treat jaundice. If not detected and treated early, jaundice can cause irreversible brain damage resulting in permanent visual, muscular or other disabilities and even death.

Experts also agree that women who have a C-section should be given medication or have compression devices placed on their legs prior to the C-section to prevent deep vein thrombosis (DVT), a serious condition that occurs when a blood clot forms in a vein located deep inside the body.

Hospitals report on their rate of newborn bilirubin screening and rate of implementing DVT prevention protocols.
