Esophageal Resection for Cancer

For early stages of cancer in the esophagus, surgeons may perform a procedure to try to remove the cancer by removing part of the esophagus or the entire esophagus. Hospitals are asked to report on their annual procedure volume and whether their hospital’s privileging process includes the surgeon meeting or exceeding Leapfrog's minimum surgeon volume standard. Hospitals also report on whether they have protocols in place to ensure that the surgery is not performed unnecessarily on patients who would not benefit.
