Esophageal Resection for Cancer

For early stages of cancer in the esophagus, surgeons may perform a procedure to try to remove the cancer by removing part of the esophagus or the entire esophagus.

This measure assesses the following:

  • A hospital's experience performing the procedure against Leapfrog's hospital volume standard of 20 procedures per year and
  • Whether the hospital’s process for privileging its surgeons includes requiring the surgeon to meet Leapfrog's annual surgeon volume standard of 7 procedures per year
